Born in Aberdeen, Alberto studied at Grays School of Art in the city from 1932 and was awarded a scholarship to study in France and Switzerland in 1939. He served in the army from 1940 until 1946 and took up the post of Head of Painting at the College of Art in Dundee (now known as Duncan of Jordanstone). He was elected Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1951, becoming a full member in 1962. He was also a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He enjoyed great success as an artist, having shows in London, Rome, Munich and Johannesburg.
