— Wilhelmina Barns-Graham CLOSEOPEN

Barns-Graham was born St Andrews in 1912 and studied painting at Edinburgh College of Art before becoming one of the central figures in the St Ives Group, arriving in St Ives in 1940. After inheriting a family house by St Andrews in 1960, she went on to divide her time between the two coastal communities until her death in St Andrews in January 2004.

Recognised as “force majeure” in post-war British art, Barns-Graham contributed greatly to the development of Modernist British painting in the mid to late twentieth century, her paintings offer considerable insight into her way of thinking and the artist’s perception of the world around her, her analytic dynamism and diverse stylistic verve that is utterly original and distinctive.
